Spiritual Charism: The Little Way of Spiritual Childhood of St. Therese of the Child Jesus.

Apostolic Charism: Evangelization and Catechesis.

Our Founder explains:
“My dearly beloved Children, Sisters, Novices, Postulants, Visitors: Our “Charism” or “Spiritual Way of Life” is “the Little Way of Spiritual Childhood of St. Therese of the Child Jesus.” This is explained in our constitutions. ... From our very beginning we have given maximum importance to our Spiritual Way of Life. We can see how, if we faithfully practise our Little Way, we shall be constantly united with God, till we can say with St. Paul: ‘I live now, not I, but Christ lives in me’” (Galatians 2:20).

(Father Bishop’s Letter to the SMI, 15 August 1974).

The Little Way is based entirely on the Gospel:

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14).

The message of the Little Way is simple, but profound! It is the biblical way - Jesus’ own way of living and acting in constant union with his Abba, Father. Its foundation is love, because God is love.

The essence of the Little Way is to consider God as our most loving and tender Father, and to do all things only to please him. The five characteristics of the Little Way are: Littleness, Weakness, Poverty, Simplicity and Absolute Confidence in God, our most loving and tender Father.

Our Father Founder has given us also the Preventive System of St. John Bosco to guide us in our Way of Life and mission. Its principles are: Reason, Religion and Loving Kindness. We can adapt this system with success to every field of work we are engaged in, whether it is the domestic service, or one of the many areas of our ministries outside, among and for our brothers and sisters.

Our Apostolate of Smiling is a unique gift to us from our Founder, who was called “the smiling bishop”. It is a consequence of our following the Little Way. A smiling countenance is the external manifestation of inner joy and serenity. A sincere smile radiates the joy of Christ, encourages another and gives confidence. It can awake a religious vocation, and can bring a sinner back to God. An optimistic and trusting attitude towards people, events and things is the result of childlike confidence in our heavenly Father.

On the very day of the foundation itself, our Father Founder was inspired to give us our heavenly Mother Mary Immaculate as our model, as “the handmaid of the Lord”. Our way of union with God was to be that of the Little Way of Spiritual Childhood of St.Therese of the Child Jesus; and the source of our strength to accomplish our sanctification, the Sacrifice of the Mass with Holy Communion” (Memoirs of Father Bishop).
